I use it horizontally, without the back panel, with the wires for the equipment running out the back. I like that it's not unsightly even when it's horizontal, because it has a decorative finish on both sides.

Instead, the sizes of 4 or more shelves have been discontinued, and the specification has been changed to connect 3 or fewer shelves by purchasing the connecting parts separately. If you are looking for something other than 3 shelves, I think this is the only choice if appearance is secondary to you when purchasing new. If you are buying more, be careful, as the color has changed with the usual minor changes, as in other reviews. I liked the plain white of the first generation, but the color has turned yellow with each minor change. The white is beautiful on the web, but the actual product is a pale dirty black and yellowish white, which is extremely tacky. I recommend checking the actual product carefully before purchasing. Also, the height changes between the old version with four or more shelves and the new version with four or more shelves connected. It is difficult to use the old version side-by-side with the new version because the height of the top panel changes.
